Introduction

Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a form of clean energy storage that is ideal for electricity grid reliability and stability. PSH complements wind and solar by storing the excess electricity they create and providing the backup for when the wind isn’t blowing, and the sun isn’t. Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a type of hydroelectric energy storage. It is a configuration of two water reservoirs at different elevations that can generate power as water moves down from one to the other (discharge), passing through a turbine. The system also requires power as it pumps water. Pumped storage projects move water between two reservoirs located at different elevations (i.e., an upper and lower reservoir) to store energy and generate electricity. Generally, when electricity demand is low (e.g., at night), excess electric generation capacity is used to pump water from the. As revealed by the Australian National University ’s recent comprehensive high-resolution global survey of potential pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) sites, the world has 820,000 PHES sites with a combined storage of 86M GWh – equivalent to the usable storage in two trillion electric vehicle.
