Introduction
The rapid uptake of wind power projects in Germany is creating a renaissance for pumped storage schemes across the country. Recent studies suggest that there may be more than 300GW of potentially feasible sites in the country, with an estimated 2-3TWh of storage capacity. The Pumped storage power plant group mainly comprises pumped storage and storage plants along the rivers Eder, Diemel, Main, Sinn, Happach, and Rusel. The plant group's total installed capacity is 884 MW, with an average annual generation of about 1,300 GWh The Pumped storage power plant group. The economical framework conditions for PSP have deteriorated dramatically. The rapid development in photovoltaics leads to a shrinking spread between peak and off-peak. The realization of new PSP-projects is uncertain. Projects to be implemented in the neighbouring states are also under. Goldisthal pumped-storage plant, in Thuringia, Germany, was officially commissioned in September 2003 and is, at present, Europe's most advanced pumped-storage plant. The pumped-storage plant is expected to reduce peak load deficits and to provide a minute reserve for losses of larger power station. April saw the release of a new study by Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen University) and commissioned by Votih Hydro which looked specifically at the future role of pumped storage power plants in Germany. The study found that by 2050, pumped storage would help. After a period of hibernation, the development of pumped‐hydro storage plants in Germany regains momentum. Motivated by an ever increasing share of intermittent renewable generation, a variety of energy players considers new projects, which could increase the available capacity by up to 60% until.
