Introduction
Hydropower currently accounts for 7% of installed generation capacity, and 43 pumped-storage hydropower (PSH) plants provide 95% of the nation’s utility-scale electrical energy storage. It is often mistakenly considered a tapped resource, but according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2016 Hydropower Vision report, hydropower’s capacity can sustainably add 50 new gigawatts by 2050 — 36 GW of which is pumped storage. The National Hydropower Association (NHA) released the 2024. Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a type of hydroelectric energy storage. It is a configuration of two water reservoirs at different elevations that can generate power as water moves down from one to the other (discharge), passing through a turbine. That would significantly increase the nation’s clean energy generation and reduce.
