Introduction
By offering insights into these emerging directions, this review aims to support the continued research and development of iron-based flow batteries for large-scale energy storage applications. A new iron-based aqueous flow battery shows promise for grid energy storage applications. A commonplace chemical used in water treatment facilities has been repurposed for large-scale energy storage in a new battery design by researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National. A modeling framework developed at MIT can help speed the development of flow batteries for large-scale, long-duration electricity storage on the future grid. Associate Professor Fikile Brushett (left) and Kara Rodby PhD ’22 have demonstrated a modeling framework that can help speed the development. Among them, iron-based aqueous redox flow batteries (ARFBs) are a compelling choice for future energy storage systems due to their excellent safety, cost-effectiveness and scalability. However, the advancement of various types of iron-based ARFBs is hindered by several critical challenges. This technology strategy assessment on flow batteries, released as part of the Long-Duration Storage Shot, contains the findings from the Storage Innovations (SI) 2030 strategic initiative. The objective of SI 2030 is to develop specific and quantifiable research, development, and deployment (RD&D). The rapid development and implementation of large-scale energy storage systems represents a critical response to the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, into the global energy grid. Redox flow batteries (RFBs) have emerged as a promising solution. A commonplace chemical used in water treatment facilities has been repurposed for large-scale energy storage in a new battery design by researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The design provides a pathway to a safe, economical, water-based, flow battery.
